eSense app for the professional user
When developing the eSense app, we also had professional users in mind. With our cloud functions and eSense Web App (www.esense.live), a trainer-client workflow can be created.
With the eSense Web App, you can view the measurements of multiple and different eSenses simultaneously and in real time. For example, you can monitor and supervise a group of 5 different users, each with their own eSense, at the same time. This means that an eSense Skin Response can be freely combined with an eSense Pulse or Temperature or Respiration. Users can even be located all over the world. All they need is a smartphone, an eSense sensor, the app and a booked plan (https://mindfield-shop.com/en/product/esense-supervisor-account-monthly-subscription-for-esense-app-and-esense-live/).
Case 1: Trainer with clients
Trainer 1 has a practice and would like to carry out a group training program with 4 clients over several weeks to reduce stress using biofeedback.
He uses the eSense sensors together with the eSense app. In the app, he would like to group the 4 clients together in order to separate them clearly from the other clients.

Case 2: Trainer creates procedures
Trainer 2 has developed several procedures for his clients in the course of his daily work with the eSense sensors. These procedures have received positive feedback on several occasions. Now he would like to offer these procedures to biofeedback users outside his client base.
He uses the cloud for this. After consultation with Mindfield, the trainer uploads their procedures to the cloud. These are made available to all users of the eSense app as in-app purchases via the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

Case 3: Company trains with employees
A company develops various customized procedures together with several trainers and creates several groups for its employees. They use the cloud and the eSense web app to implement this efficiently.

Case 4: Trainer tests app
A biofeedback trainer has never worked with the eSense sensors before and would like to try them out. He orders the eSense sensors in the store and tests them directly in his practice with his team or his clients. He does not need an account, the cloud or the eSense web app for this test.

Research, your own software and data analysis
A research team records eSense data alongside other devices and analyses it in its own software. For this the eSense app transmits the readings in real time via LSL (Lab Streaming Layer) to LabRecorder, OpenViBE, BCI2000, MATLAB or pylsl, or via OSC to Max/MSP, Pure Data, TouchDesigner or Processing. LSL keeps several devices on a shared time base, which is what tips the scales in multimodal studies. Both routes are paid add-on features, unlocked through an in-app purchase, and included with the professional eSense set. How to set them up is described under Streaming eSense data and in detail in the help desk.
Further functions for professional users
- If you want to build the sensors into your own application, use the eSense SDK instead of the app: native SDKs for Android, iOS/macOS and Windows, plus wrappers for Unity, Unreal, Flutter and Capacitor. The eSense Pulse can even be read without the SDK, because it uses the standard Bluetooth heart rate service.
- On shared devices the data of a supervised client can be reset from the profile page, and every user can delete their own data per sensor. Both are described in the Supervisor Guide.
- Recordings can be exported as CSV or PDF and the archive backed up as a ZIP file. How to analyse the CSV files is explained in Analysis of eSense data (CSV).
- Selected readings can be transferred to Apple Health and Health Connect.
- Since app versions 8.1.x the app smooths the measurement signal, and since 8.1.6 a new criterion applies to the counting of spontaneous fluctuations. We disclose both: signal smoothing and Skin Conductance Response (SCR). Which change came with which version is listed in the changelog.
Data privacy
Due to the typical use cases of the eSense’s, data protection is of course an important issue for us. All data from the eSense is stored in encrypted form
The app requires permission to access the microphone (for Skin Response, Temperature, Respiration) or Bluetooth (Pulse) (as the data from the sensors is received via the microphone or Bluetooth). In addition, the app also requires permission to access media files if you want to use your own videos and photos in the app.
Without the use of an eSense account, we do not use any other data (including personal data such as your name or contacts), as this is not necessary for the operation of eSense. The data is all stored locally and anonymized on your phone, unless you consciously export it. You therefore always have complete access to your measurement data. We disclose every step of signal processing: since app versions 8.1.x the app smooths the measurement signal with an adaptive filter that removes the technically induced noise of the measurement chain and lets genuine responses through unchanged. The method and the parameters per sensor are described in Why does my curve look smoother than before?. Your complete and unaltered access to your own data is very important to us. We do not use your data in this case.
When using an eSense account (e.g. to access the cloud functions or the eSense web app), we must collect the technically necessary data. This data is stored in encrypted form in a Firebase database. This naturally includes at least your registered e-mail address and your password. However, we may also collect other data relating to your profile, such as your name, age and gender, if you wish to enter these in your profile (although this is optional).
If you also wish to use the cloud functions, your measurements and, if applicable, your procedures (including the media used for them, such as your own images or videos) are of course also stored in the cloud. Again, we would like to mention that we will not use your data unless expressly and consciously agreed with you (for example, in the context of a commercial collaboration, for example, if you want to offer your self-created procedures to other users via the cloud).
