Mindfield® eSense Skin Response | Measure & train skin resistance

Measure skin resistance with the eSense Skin Response!

The Mindfield eSense is a handy sensor for measuring skin resistance via the microphone input of a smartphone or tablet (Android and Apple iOS).

Skin resistance is related to tension and relaxation and is a common indicator of stress. With the eSense Skin Response, you are able to measure your stress level and effectively reduce it through biofeedback training.

The eSense gives the user precise feedback on the current stress level in a variety of ways, e.g. through measurement curves, diagrams, video and audio displays. This means you can easily measure your skin resistance and immediately receive easy-to-understand feedback on your end device.

The device uses the audio output of your smartphone or tablet for audio biofeedback. In addition to the audio feedback, you can also listen to music or audio books during anti-stress training!

The app that comes with the eSense is completely free and also allows the collected measurement data to be exported (e.g. via email, Dropbox or Google Drive).

Measure your skin resistance now and get instant biofeedback from your body. For less stress in everyday life and better control over your body.

The skin conductance

The term skin conductance or skin resistance refers to measurable changes in the electrical properties of the skin. Skin conductance is an important parameter for checking the body’s reactions to various influences.

By measuring skin resistance, you can recognize how your nervous system reacts to various stimuli. Skin conductance/skin resistance is also used in clinical diagnostics; doctors use this parameter to assess the function of the autonomic nervous system.

Measuring your skin conductance provides you with important information about your body’s stress reactions and your nervous system. This enables you to optimize your physical condition in a targeted manner. Individual training, perfectly adapted to your body and your needs.

But it’s not just skin conductance that can provide important information about the body; measuring your skin temperature also reveals a lot about your stress level!

Measure skin resistance and get direct biofeedback for stress

The eSense Skin Response measures the skin conductance in µSiemens. For this purpose  two electrodes on the index and middle finger.

A low, completely harmless voltage is applied to the skin via the two electrodes of the eSense Skin Response, through which a very low current flows. The more tense or stressed you are, the moister the skin becomes and the better the current is conducted, so the skin conductance increases as a result.

With the eSense Skin Response, you can easily measure your skin resistance at any time and get immediate biofeedback from your body. This easy application is suitable for all age groups.

Biofeedback training with eSense Skin Response

In the professional sector, skin conductance training is the preferred Biofeedback training for anxiety, panic and learning to relax. Biofeedback training with the eSense Skin Response is therefore an effective method of improving the body’s self-control.

The sweat glands are controlled by the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic nervous system) and react directly to the slightest emotional, physical and mental changes. The increase in skin conductance is clearly visible when exposed to a stress stimulus. This stimulus can be, for example, mental activity, emotional arousal, deep breathing or even a fright.

Even the smallest changes become visible with the help of the app and can be used for a Biofeedback training can be used to reduce stress. Biofeedback training with the eSense app improves your body’s resistance to stress and increases your well-being. Measure your skin resistance now and actively work against stress.   One Detailed instructions are included in the free app.

eSense Mobile App

Icon eSense The eSense includes the Mindfield eSense app, which you can download free of charge from the Google Play Store (Android) or the Apple App Store (iOS). It offers a wealth of functions for effective biofeedback training in a modern design. Key functions include the display of measured values as a bar graph and oscilloscope, feedback via video, music, sound, vibration and light from smart light bulbs.

eSense Web App and SDK

In addition to the app, we have also developed an eSense web app that mirrors and therefore complements the app. You can use this with the account and plans mentioned above. You can analyze your recorded data (with the Basic plan) or even transfer your data to a PC in real time (live-streaming, with the Premium plan).

The main advantage of this is that you can see the graph even better on a large screen and enlarge individual areas.

You can also create your own apps with our SDK. We have also developed an eSense Web App with which you can stream your measurement data directly to a PC.

Procedures (within the eSense mobile app)

A procedure consists of various modules. A module can be, for example, a picture, a video, a piece of music, a bar chart, an arrow or others. You can combine the modules in any length and order to create a fixed procedure. Some contain biofeedback functions (i.e. they reflect the changes in the measured value from the eSense).

Procedure Archive German

The procedures can thus be used, for example, to implement relaxation instructions, a stress test, a defined biofeedback training session or tasks for research purposes. The possibilities are endless. During a procedure, your skin conductance or skin temperature is of course recorded (based on the eSense sensor you are using). At the end of a procedure, a summary is displayed, showing your readings for each module and in total. You can also export these to Excel or similar programs for further, more accurate analysis.

Opt for the Skin Response for:

  • sweaty hands
  • Worry and distraction
  • excited mood
  • a low anger threshold
  • poor impulse control.

How is it easy to use?

  • When you purchase the eSense Skin Response, you can download our free app from the App Store (Apple®) or Google Play (Android). (You can also do this in advance, but the app will not display any meaningful values without a sensor).
  • Then attach the two enclosed Velcro electrodes to your index and middle fingers.
  • Connect the eSense Skin Response to the microphone input of your device and to the Velcro electrodes.
  • Start the app and click on “Start”, this will start the measurement.
  • Read the detailed instructions within the app to perform good biofeedback training.
  • Have fun with the eSense Skin Response!
  • P.S.: You can reorder Velcro electrodes in our store. However, these last for many measurements.

Who is the eSense suitable for?

  • for private users / home users
  • for professional users (biofeedback trainers). We also have a professional user set consisting of all 4 eSense sensors and an optional SDK in the Mindfield Shop. The SDK itself is also available for purchase. You can use the SDK to develop your own apps for the eSense if you wish.

Which iOS devices are supported?

      • All iOS devices from version 15 or higher, which are (in extracts):
      • Apple® iPhone® 6S, iPhone® SE/SE 2, iPhone® 7/7+, iPhone® 8/8+, iPhone® X, iPhone® XR, iPhone® XS, iPhone® 11/11 Pro, iPhone® 12/12 Pro, iPhone® 13/13 Pro, iPhone® 14/14 Pro, iPhone® 15/15 Pro
      • Apple® iPad® from 5th generation or newer, including all iPad Mini from 4th generation and iPad Air from 2nd generation
      • Apple® iPad® Pro from 1st generation or newer
      • Note: Some newer iOS devices without the classic 3.5mm headphone jack and with the newer Lightning/USB-C connection also work perfectly with the eSense. You will need either an original Apple USB-C or original Apple Lightning to 3.5 mm connection adapter (not included with the eSense). Alternatively, you can also use any other adapter with a DAC chip. We recommend this Adapter on Amazon

Which Android devices are supported?

      • all Android smartphones and tablets from Android 10.0 (Android Q) Your Android device requires a 3.5 mm 4-pin headphone jack (headset compatible). For Android devices without a headphone jack, you can use an adapter with a DAC chip. We recommend this adapter on Amazon.
      • If you are planning to purchase a device specifically for use with the eSense, we recommend a Nokia G10, a Nokia G21, a Motorola Moto E40 or a Xiaomi Redmi 10 as an inexpensive entry-level device.

Can the eSense cable be extended?

      • If you would like to have a longer cable between the eSense and your smartphone or tablet, you can extend the original cable of the eSense with a standard 4-pin 3.5mm jack headset extension cable. We have tested three cables for you:
