What we stand for

Mindfield Biosystems was founded in Berlin in 2003; today the company is based in Gronau (Westphalia). Throughout the years our attitude has stayed the same: we are not interested in the quick sale, but in mature, innovative technology — technology that genuinely works and is used in many places for fundamental research.

What makes Mindfield special is the fusion of expertise from worlds that rarely come together: the hands-on experience of therapists and trainers who work with patients and clients every day; the methodical knowledge of researchers; the skill of our own team of hardware and software developers; and a managing director who, as a biologist with deep technical understanding, speaks both languages. From this combination come products that are scientifically sound, technically mature and genuinely useful in everyday life.

To achieve this, we work closely with universities and research institutions and maintain a direct line to the people who use our products — because that exchange is where the best improvements come from. This is how we keep developing our product range; you can count on regular new releases.

Our history — milestone by milestone

2003

Founded in Berlin. The start as a young, research-driven technology company for biofeedback, neurofeedback and audio-visual stimulation (mind machines).

2008

MindMaster® EEG. Our first 2-channel EEG device, designed specifically for neurofeedback — approved as a Class IIa medical device. It came with our in-house software Mindfield Mindstream, later succeeded by Mindfield BioEra (based on BioEra.net).

2011

Mindfield® MindLights®. Market launch of our own mind machine for audio-visual stimulation (LED mask and software, Basic & MulticolorPro models). No longer available today — but a piece of Mindfield history whose roots lie in an award-winning Jugend forscht project by the company’s founder.

2012

Launch of the eSense® sensor family. Mobile biofeedback straight on your smartphone or tablet — as one of the very first providers. The first sensors: eSense Skin Response (skin conductance) and eSense Temperature (skin temperature).

2013 / 2014 Full range

A new modular MindMaster generation. A complete redesign for practice and research: a modular, powerful device system for biofeedback, neurofeedback or both at once (Bio · Neuro · BioNeuro). From this point on we were a full-range supplier, covering all relevant biofeedback and neurofeedback parameters — from skin conductance, temperature, pulse/HRV, respiration and EMG to multi-channel EEG.

2018

eSense Pulse & eSense Respiration. The mobile sensor family grows with pulse measurement (heart rate variability) and respiration.

2020

eSense Muscle. Muscle activity (EMG) as a mobile 2-channel sensor with Bluetooth — available as Home and Pro versions. For targeted muscle building as well as tension and relaxation training, with its own web app for professional EMG biofeedback on iOS, Android and in the browser.

2024

eSense EEGenius. Mobile EEG neurofeedback for home training, web-based — neurofeedback training that makes the step from the practice into your home.

2026 New

Major software updates for the MindMaster devices. Substantial updates to both the neurofeedback software and the biofeedback software — more features, more comfort and continuous development for existing and new devices.

Our product world

Mindfield eSense sensors

Mobile

eSense® Sensors

Mobile biofeedback on the go: eSense Skin Response, Temperature, Pulse, Respiration and Muscle (Home/Pro), controlled via the free eSense app. From stress management, relaxation and self-regulation to concentration and mindfulness training, all the way to use in therapy, coaching, sport and research.

eSense EEGenius – mobile EEG neurofeedback

Innovation

eSense EEGenius

Mobile EEG neurofeedback for the home — web-based and via Bluetooth. It can be used to train concentration, attention and relaxation — including preventively. Our latest step towards making neurofeedback training accessible beyond the practice.

MindMaster devices for practice and research

Professional

MindMaster®

Modular devices for practice and research: Neuro 4, Bio and BioNeuro, combined with our neurofeedback software modules (incl. SCP, QEEG, multi-channel).

Mindfield biofeedback software and partner solutions

Software & Partners

Software & partner solutions

Mindfield BioEra (a visual designer for your own biofeedback applications, based on BioEra.net), Kubios HRV (Scientific / Team Readiness) and Bittium FAROS (long-term ECG). For developers we offer SDKs (Windows / macOS / Unity C#).

Mindfield MindLights – historic mind machine for audio-visual stimulation

History

Mindfield® MindLights®

Our own mind machine for audio-visual stimulation: an LED mask with professional software that used light and sound signals to encourage cognitive and emotional states (Basic & MulticolorPro models). No longer available today — an important part of our history.

The face of Mindfield

Niko Rockensüß, Founder and Managing Director of Mindfield Biosystems

Niko Rockensüß — Founder & Managing Director

Niko Rockensüß founded Mindfield Biosystems in 2003 — right after finishing secondary school (Abitur) — and has led the company ever since, full-time since 2011. As a biologist (Dipl.-Biol., Free University of Berlin, graduated 2010 with distinction) specialising in neurobiology and biopsychology, he combines a scientific foundation with a deep technical understanding of the devices and software created at Mindfield.

He wrote his diploma thesis at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, where he then worked as a research associate until 2014; in 2009 he deepened his studies with an Erasmus exchange at Stockholm University. In 2014 he also passed the state examination as a non-medical psychotherapy practitioner (Heilpraktiker für Psychotherapie).

This combination — neuroscience, technical depth and therapeutic practice — makes him the interface between developers, researchers and users. As the face of Mindfield, he also presents many of our explainer and tutorial videos.

From a school project to a product. Already as a pupil in Berlin he explored audio-visual stimulation: at Jugend forscht (Germany’s national youth science competition) he and two classmates investigated the “effectiveness and proof of effect of a self-built mind machine” — exactly the technology that Mindfield later turned into a product with the MindLights®. The project was awarded 3rd place in the national final of Jugend forscht (Biology category).

“I am not interested in the quick sale, but in technology that really works — and in users who learn something about themselves with it. That is exactly what we work for at Mindfield every day.”

The team behind Mindfield

Behind Mindfield stands an interdisciplinary team in which exactly those worlds work together that make up our products: engineers and developers for hardware and software, scientists, experienced occupational therapists with years of hands-on practice applying neurofeedback and biofeedback, as well as a support team that accompanies users directly from the manufacturer. From sensor design and app development to personal advice, we work to make biofeedback and neurofeedback understandable and suitable for everyday use.

Research & partnerships

Many of our developments are created in close cooperation with universities, research institutions and partners from therapy, sport and industry. In our studies hub we collect scientific work on biofeedback, neurofeedback and HRV; on our partner pages we present technology, research and application partners. Mindfield is also a supporting member of the German Society for Biofeedback (DGBfB).

Mindfield on YouTube

On our YouTube channel we show how biofeedback and neurofeedback work in practice: explainer videos, product tutorials and step-by-step guides — from the eSense sensors and the eSense Muscle web app to EEGenius and neurofeedback training. Most of the videos are presented by Niko Rockensüß himself — the face of Mindfield.
