IDUN Technologies is an ETH Zurich spin-off from Switzerland and a pioneer in in-ear EEG. Their patented DRYODE® dry electrodes enable everyday EEG measurements directly from the ear via Guardian earbuds. Together with Mindfield, we combine central brain activity (EEG) and peripheral biosignals (EDA, HRV, EMG) into a complete psychophysiological monitoring system.

Technology: DRYODE® & Guardian In-Ear EEG
IDUN Technologies solved a fundamental challenge in electroencephalography with their patented DRYODE® technology: Conventional EEG systems require conductive gel, extensive skin preparation, and bulky caps. DRYODE® dry electrodes are made from soft, biocompatible silicone with embedded conductive particles, delivering clinical-grade signal quality – no gel, no preparation needed.

Partnership: Multimodal Biofeedback
The partnership between IDUN Technologies and Mindfield Biosystems combines two complementary approaches to psychophysiological measurement:
Complementary Signals
| IDUN Guardian | Mindfield eSense & MindMaster |
| EEG (central/cortical, in-ear) | EDA / Skin Conductance (eSense Skin Response) |
| Cognitive states, sleep, attention | HRV / Heart Rate Variability (eSense Pulse) |
| Alpha, beta, theta activity | EMG / Muscle Tension (eSense Muscle) |
| Respiration (eSense Respiration) | |
| Temperature (eSense Temperature) |
Together, both systems enable complete psychophysiological monitoring for home training, research, and clinical applications. The technical prerequisites for integration are in place:
- Bluetooth Low Energy: Both systems use BLE for wireless connectivity
- Dry Electrodes: No gel preparation – ready to use immediately
- Lab Streaming Layer (LSL): Guardian supports LSL; LSL integration for eSense sensors is planned
- Home Training Ready: Compact, intuitive, designed for end users
Current Development: Mindfield is currently evaluating the IDUN Guardian hardware for integration into existing biofeedback workflows. The goal is a multimodal setup combining in-ear EEG with peripheral biosignals from eSense sensors and MindMaster amplifiers.
Scientific Validation
IDUN Technologies is cited in over 13 peer-reviewed publications. The in-ear EEG technology has been validated in several independent studies:
- Sleep Staging: Correlation r = 0.78 with clinical PSG gold standard (Cohen’s Kappa 0.71)
- Alpha Detection: Correlation r = 0.92 with conventional EEG
- Cognitive Workload: 96% classification accuracy for workload detection
- Additional Areas: Attention, meditation, auditory evoked potentials (AEP)
